The One Hairstyling Studio

Jeff Low, Head Stylist and owner of "The One Hairstyling Studio", came highly recommended by a friend of mine who adores quirky Japanese-inspired hairstyles.

Hailing from Malaysia, Jeff has been operating out of his salon in Toa Payoh for a number of years, and is popular among the young crowd, who come to him for J-Rock and Punk inspired styles or Cosplay events. Jeff is especially good at creating "Pop" hairstyles with a lot of volume at the crown and wispy ends at the base.

The location in the heartlands means that Jeff is able to offer his services at incredibly affordable prices. A hair cut by Jeff himself starts at just $14 for men, or from $12 by his assistant stylist. Other services include make-up, photography and wedding packages.

If you enjoy playing around with your hair colour, the salon carries a wide variety of wacky colours by premium hair-colour brand Hoyu, from Japan. Should you prefer something a little more friendly on the wallet, Jeff is often able to suggest alternatives close to what you have in mind.

Price: Extremely reasonable. Where else in Singapore can you get Platinum highlights done at just $90?

Operating Hours: Tues to Sat 9.30am-7.30pm, Sun 10am-7pm, Closed Mon

Plus Points: Affordable prices, comfortable chairs and innovative styles not often seen elsewhere. Location is within walking distance from Braddell MRT Station. Make-up and photography packages by Jeff are available.

Minus Points: Jeff, though friendly, possesses a unique character that may turn some people off. The salon also closes early, and is a little hard to find if you're not familiar with the area.

Verdict: One-of-a-kind hairstyles with a certain distinctive flair. Quality is above average for the price. Salon is cozy yet comfortable. Bear with the minor inconveniences and you'll be rewarded with a gorgeous and unique new look!

Note: A novel sight to look out for is the "quacky" neighbourhood duck! This fully-grown white-feathered bird with yellow webbed feet was abandoned by one of the residents in the estate and now roams around the area outside Jeff's salon.
